Garth passed peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, generosity, and quiet strength that touched countless lives.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on October 17, 1933, Garth was the son of Mary and Ernest Nicholson and brother to Harvey—all of whom predeceased him. Garth was a bright and driven student, graduating from high school at the young age of 16. He began post-secondary studies at the University of Regina, but after two years his parents encouraged him to enter the workforce, he took a job with the Saskatchewan Government Insurance, where he worked for six years.
In 1958, Garth married the love of his life, Martha. Together they built a warm and loving family, raising three children—D’Arcy, Darlene, and Tracy—who were the pride of his life. After their marriage, Garth returned to school at the University of Saskatchewan to earn his teaching credentials. He began his teaching career in Swift Current and, in 1966, moved with his young family to Kelowna, British Columbia, where he continued teaching for the remainder of his career. Though he originally taught band, choir and math, Garth eventually focused entirely on math alone, a subject he loved and taught with passion until his retirement in 1996.
Beyond the classroom, Garth was a man of many talents. He earned a piano degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music and shared his musical gifts through community theatre performances and family gatherings. Music brought him great joy, and he played well into his later years. Garth was also a passionate sportsman and an enthusiastic supporter of youth athletics. He bowled a perfect game at the age of 69 and was a dedicated YBC coach. He umpired countless softball games— ladies’, mixed, and kids’ leagues—and was an ardent fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. His voice could often be heard above the crowd, cheering on his daughters, grandchildren, and anyone who needed encouragement in a tough moment.
Garth is survived by his beloved wife Martha, his children and their spouses, D'Arcy (Blaine), Darlene and Tracy (Scott) as well as his cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, Jordyn, Amanda, Kristopher, Cayley, Luke, and Cody. They will always remember "Grampa knows everything". He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, all of whom remember him for his warmth, guidance, and good humor.
To know Garth was to feel supported. He was the one cheering when times were hard, offering a steady hand and a listening ear. He found joy in the simple things—family, work, music, and sports—and gave his heart fully to the people and communities he served.
He will be missed deeply and remembered always.
At the request of Garth, no service will be held with cremation .
