Jack Masterman passed away in Kelowna, BC on May 30, 2022. He was born on August 8, 1930 in Calgary, Alberta and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jack is survived by his wife Theresa, children Christine Murray (Brian), Lawrence (Susan), Keith (Chris) and Derek (Robin), and sister Babs Church (the late Evan), 12 grandchildren , 11 great-grandchildren, and his many nieces and nephews. Jack is predeceased by his first wife Isabel (née Kaitting), daughter Sheila Macdonald (Bruce) and sister Ann Northcote (the late Bruce). Jack attended the University of Manitoba and obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Commerce, before becoming a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. The Mutual Group recruited him directly from university and he moved to Waterloo, Ontario to begin his 46-year career with them in 1953, becoming CEO and Chairman of the Board before retiring in 1999. He served as President of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association and was active in a number of causes both before and after retirement including advocating for organ donation, United Way, volunteering in hospice and serving as a Board member for the Victorian Order of Nurses. Jack's family was always his priority and he strove to pass on to his children a broad and open-minded relationship with the world, instilling an appreciation for travel and reading. He and Isabel took their children camping across North America and traveling offshore, and spent time at the cottage on Lake of Bays in Muskoka, giving them a lifetime of experiences and happy memories. He developed the same close bond with Derek when he joined the family. After retirement, Jack and Theresa enjoyed a love of golf and world travel together. In retirement, they settled in Kelowna, British Columbia, spent winters in Tucson, Arizona and enjoyed many friendships and visits from family and friends. Most of all, he showed everyone how to treat people well and with respect, and to lead a life lived well with hard work, decisiveness, strong principles and integrity. He was a rare man and we will miss him greatly. There will be a private family memorial at a future date
