Janet Slyter

Janet will be dearly missed and is survived by her four daughters, Shirley, Kathy (Dave), Wendy (David), and Glenda (Duane). She loved her grandchildren, Barry, James, Robyn (Jeremy), Andrew, David (Laura), Allison (Buck), Russell (Brittany), Gordon, and Jesse, but she truly adored her great-grandchildren Aurelia, Gabrielle, Ashton, Peggy, Sadie, and Grace. It was clear that Janet loved all the children who came into her life, and would spoil them as much as their parents would allow.

Salma Janet Slyter was predeceased by her parents George and Nettie Mussellam and brothers Ed, Alvin, Jack, Fred, Ervin, Rick, and by her husband, Wayne. As the only daughter, she often teased her brothers that she didn't have a favourite, when in fact, she really looked up most to her brother Ervin. Janet was affectionately called Auntie Noonie, by the Mussellam nieces and nephews who loved her very much.

Janet was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1933. As a young woman she lived in Montreal, where she worked as a secretary and was known as "Jeanette". While later living in Kelowna, Janet attended a card game with Rick, and there she met Wayne Slyter, a widower. They would marry in 1965. Wayne had four young daughters, and she wholeheartedly took on the role as their mother. While raising the children and being a housewife, Janet launched her career as a Tupperware maven, rising to district sales manager. Along the way, she won a car, trips abroad, and most important of all, a new dishwasher. Janet was known for her fashionable sense of style, and would have dresses made to order – under her direction – for both herself and the girls. In the 80s she opened her own childrenswear store, BoPeep, on South Pandosy. She later worked in clothing retail at Twigs, a division of Brambles. She was also involved with Wayne's company Slyter Logging, in various administrative duties.

Janet truly valued friendship, and was blessed with many close friends. She was known for her bubbly personality and was always happy to welcome family and guests to her home. She was a wonderful cook and many memorable meals were shared around her table. Together, Janet and Rick, planned and hosted several Mussellam family reunions over the years.

She loved golf, shopping, cooking, entertaining, and traveling. She golfed as long as she could, until her health kept her from that sport. Gambling was also a fun pastime, especially the Vegas trips. Janet would often be at the forefront of a new food or restaurant in town. Her all-time favourite restaurant was La Bussola, where she was always a special guest.

A Celebration of Life for Janet will be held next summer in July 2027, in Kelowna, to which friends and family will be invited. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the KGH Foundation.

The family would like to thank the staff at Missionwood Retirement Resort where she lived, the Kelowna Homecare Solutions Staff, the staff at KGH, especially in the ICU department, and First Memorial Funeral Services.
