It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Kayla Anne Northrup, known affectionately as Sister Lopez, Kay Kay Fab, or simply Sissy, who left this world on January 21, 2024, in Kelowna, British Columbia. She was 34 years old.
Kayla was born on January 31, 1989, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and spent her early years in the close-knit community of Chipman, New Brunswick. She ventured to Alberta in 2006 and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Vegreville in 2007. Later, she pursued her passion for travel, studying at MacEwan University in 2015.
An adventurer at heart, Kayla traversed the globe, embracing diverse cultures and experiences in Mexico, the U.S., Thailand, Jamaica, Amsterdam, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Greece, England, Ireland, and beyond. Her zest for life was infectious, and her spirit of exploration had no limits.
Kayla's family meant everything to her. She leaves behind her mother, Sherry Lee Alden (Northrup), her sisters Tiffany Northrup and Cassandra Northrup, and her father Thomas (Andy) Barratt. Her death was preceded by the passing of her stepfather Graydon Alden on August 10, 2020. She was very protective of her loved ones, especially her little sister, always ready to lend a shoulder to lean on.
Known for her vibrant personality, Kayla was a force of nature. She loved to sing karaoke, dance, attend music festivals and raves, and spend time at the beach. Her sense of humor, marked by sarcasm and wit, could brighten even the darkest days. She was fiercely loyal, yet tender-hearted beneath her tough exterior.
Kayla possessed a remarkable talent for connecting with people, offering sage advice and a listening ear to all who sought her out. Her creativity knew no bounds, whether crafting elaborate costumes for an event, or telling funny stories in her excited and silly way.
Memories of Kayla will be cherished forever. From impromptu adventures to late-night laughter sessions, her presence brought joy to all who knew her.
In remembrance of Kayla's indomitable spirit, a Celebration of Life will be held this summer to honor her memory and the legacy she leaves behind. Details about the event will be shared at a later date. Until then, we invite you to share your fondest memories of Kayla, keeping her spirit alive in our hearts and minds.
Those who were close to her remember her favourite quotes, full of laughter:
"You're either in... or you're in the way."
"I gotta sit and eat my dessert alone like I'm fucking Steven Glandsburg?" (Superbad)
"Get out of my house!" (I Know What You Did Last Summer)

"Oh, the weather outside is weather!" (Forgetting Sarah Marshall)
“I’m itchy and I wanna go home!” (Overboard)

Though she may be gone from our sight, Kayla's spirit lives on in the laughter, love, and memories she shared with us all. She truly was one of a kind, and she will be deeply missed.
