Born on December 11, 1943, in Montreal, Quebec, Len lived a full and active life marked by dedication to his work and, most notably, to his community. He built a respected career as an air traffic controller, serving in towers across Canada before ultimately settling in Kelowna, where he remained for the later chapters of his life.
Leonard married Wendy McFarlane in 1974, and together they raised their two children, Chris and Katie. Wendy passed away in December 2015. Len is survived by his son Chris (Taylor), and their daughters Emma, Makena, and Willow; and his daughter Katie (Jason McIntyre), and their daughters Kael and Norah. Len also shared the past nine years with his partner, Sharon Attree, whose companionship brought him so much happiness.
He is also survived by his sister, Barb Hagan, and was predeceased by his brothers, Gord McFarlane and Roy McFarlane.
Leonard was a man who found his greatest sense of purpose through community involvement. He was deeply engaged in the Kettle Valley Residents Association, where he played a key role in organizing community events like neighborhood garage sales, Easter Egg Hunts and Outdoor Movie nights—initiatives that helped foster connection and community spirit. He was also an active member of the Kelowna Community Concert Association, supporting local arts and cultural events.
His enthusiasm for connection extended into his personal interests as well. Leonard was a devoted member of the Miata Club and took great pride in his beloved car, “Pumpkin.” Whether attending events, volunteering, or simply enjoying time with others, Len gravitated toward shared experiences and community-building. He will be remembered for his commitment to bringing people together and for the many ways he helped shape the community he called home.
A celebration of Len’s life will be held on June 30 at 10am, at First Memorial Funeral Home.
