(MACFARLANE, HERNON)
August 11 1922 – January 12 2025
With very heavy hearts, our mother, grandmother and great grandmother quietly and peacefully passed away here in Kelowna at the grand age of 102 and ½ years.
Marguerite was born and brought up in Ottawa, Ontario as the only daughter of George Douglas Evans (1896 – 1984) and Marguerite Catherine Bracken Evans (1898-1952) and was pre de -ceased by a baby brother George Orford Evans in 1925.
Her early life was centered in Ottawa with a brief time in Montreal Quebec, then returned to Ottawa and then in 1951 moved to Vancouver BC with her children. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Vivian Comben (Herbert C. Comben – deceased) and George Evans Macfarlane (Maureen Heather) and Grandchildren Michael George Macfarlane – (Kathleen) and Great Grandchildren Kathryn Anne and Samantha May and Grandson James Anthony Macfarlane. She will also be remembered by her former son in law John R Morse as they enjoyed and continued their friendship over the many years.
Marguerite started her working life at C F BOGART Co Ltd learning to be a bookkeeper at her aunt Mary Pearl Evans Bogart and uncle Charles Francis Bogart’s company which in turn took her to other opportunities at CP Air and finally at the B C Cancer Institute from where she retired in about 1979.
Her retirement years found she and Paul living first on Saltspring Island BC where she developed a serious interest in provincial politics, followed by a more determined involvement in the Reform Party of Canada and then the party in BC. A few years later, they moved back to the “mainland” where Paul died early in 1984. Shortly afterwards, she moved to the Okanagan, a place she loved from her early vacations in the 1950 ‘s and 1960’s at Kalamalka Lake near Vernon BC.
Marguerite enjoyed her travels with friends to Hawaii, California, and cruises to Alaska and other parts of the world plus many trips with Klassic Bus Tours to points in BC and some of the western states in the USA. She especially enjoyed her visits to special friends, the Bellos’ at their Willow Ranch on the old Merritt highway and then their home in Knutsford BC.
Marguerite was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International by her daughter Catherine to recognize the volunteer work Marg did in and around the Kelowna community. Other activities she loved was house, grandchildren and family pet dog (Ming and Desi) sitting and traveling to the Macfarlane cabin at Green Lake at any time of the year.
Our special thanks to Dr. Koss and the staff at Orchard Manor but especially Violet along with her team of aides - Annie, Christine and Amraj from All in One Health and Home Services Ltd for their care and friendship from the latter years at Mission Villas to her last days at Orchard Manor -Hawthorn Park.
In addition, a very special Thank You to Fr. Ron Thompson of St Peter and Paul Parish in Vancouver BC for dedicating a mass in her honour on January 12 2025.
Marguerite’s life encompassed a wonderful and fulfilled time and she will be truly missed by all the lives she touched over her 100 plus years.
As per her wishes and stated request, no remembrance service will be held and her ashes will be spread to areas important in her life.
