Michael was born on August 8, 1958, in Montreal. He grew up and took his schooling in Churchill and Saskatoon. He lived a brief period in Yak, BC, and in 2002, moved to Kelowna to be with family.
Michael's life from birth was fraught with many complex health challenges. He was born with physical, medical and intellectual challenges. Throughout all these challenges he faced, his soul was filled with the love of his family; his love for his sister and her family gave him some of the greatest joys. He relished and cherished these moments and memories with all of us. He loved all our family get-togethers from picnics, boating, wineries, BBQs, pubs and restaurants, all our celebrations and football games. He loved his Italian heritage and especially loved our Mediterranean nights. He loved the waterfront in Kelowna and could often be found walking downtown or visiting Kelly O's or Roses or one of the other pubs downtown.
Michael worked for a few years in construction and autobody in Saskatoon, but eventually would have to go on Disability.
Michael loved when people took the time to understand and accept him as the unique individual that he was. He was someone who, unfortunately, was often misunderstood because of his challenges.
Michael found the little joys in life and had enthusiasm for each new day. He viewed the world with the innocence of a child and taught us what was truly important in life...family/friends/love/support and understanding.
Michael was blessed to have wonderful supportive organizations in Kelowna, who helped him over the years. These included Community Living, Gospel Mission, and John Howard Society, as well as staff at Three Links Manor and the Dialysis Unit at KGH. We are forever indebted to these people for the love and care they offered him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any one of these wonderful organizations. It takes a village and all of these people deserve to be recognized.
In closing, I will miss our talks, phone calls and visits, and especially hearing him call me "Careen Careen" and "I haven't been there in a coons age", as well as his continuing ribbing of me that I was older than him and was going to need a cane or rocking chair any day! I'll miss you Mike, love you.
Michael leaves behind his sister Corinne Gutka and her husband Jim, as well as her sons, Dustin Abernethy (Jessie, Aurora and Isyss), as well as Adam and Lacey Abernethy (Alex and Ava) and his Deloli family in Winnipeg, Deb and Dean and their families.
He was predeceased by his mother, Jessie, in 1983, his father, Edward, in 2013, his brother, Vic, in 2012, and his nephew, Joel, in 2017.
The family will be having a private celebration of life this summer.
