Norman Harrower Smith

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Norm (Pops) Smith. Norm passed away peacefully on July 9th, 2026, at the Central Okanagan Hospice House – two months short of his 88th birthday.

Norm was born on the homestead in Saskatchewan which the family abandoned at the end of the Dirty Thirties. They head for Alberta where his father signed up with R.C.A.F. They finally settled in Calgary where he attended school and became involved in all sports, especially hockey. He played Junior and Senior hockey and Major Men’s baseball.

In 1960 he and Maureen married and spent time in Edmonton and Calgary. Vancouver called in 1965 and they spent the next 35 years living on the coast. Norm was involved with the lumber industry in brokering and sales. He was also an entrepreneur, bringing several new products to market. Norm also played Oldtimers hockey for 30 years with the Vancouver Flames and coached both sons in hockey and umpired their ball games.

When not on the ice, he could be found on the golf course. The year 2000 found us moving to West Kelowna to work and retire. Norm was now able to join his son Mike and coach his grandson Everton’s hockey team and go to his ball games. He loved time spent with the grandchildren and the trips we made to Disneyland and Drumheller, and all points between. He supported them in all their adventures.

Norm (Pops) is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Maureen, son Greg, grandchildren Lindsay (David), Everton (Haley), Tianna (Chase). He was predeceased by his parents, sister, two brothers and our son Michael. Norm was a loving Husband and Father, a doting grandpa (Pops) and a good friend to his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Norm’s life will be held later.
