Margaret Abel (nee Bennett) was born in 1922, on the Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc reserve. On August 13, 2023, at the age of 101, she left this earth to begin her journey home to the stars, surrounded by her family at her home in Kelowna, BC.
Predeceased by her loving husband Philip in 1992, Margaret was the last living member of a large, blended family of 16 siblings. Her brothers include Adam, Eddie, and Wilfred Bennett. Her sisters include Irene Blair, Lottie Buchanan, and Elsie Bergan.
Mom was a survivor of the Kamloops Indian residential school and spoke of her memories in the book “Behind Closed Doors: Stories from the Kamloops Indian Residential School” published by the Secwepemc Cultural Education Society in 2000. Despite this painful childhood experience, she always had a smile and hug for everyone she met, and she spread love and positivity her entire life.
After meeting Dad, they eventually settled in Terrace, BC to raise their four children together – James, Ray, Jean, and Lena. Fondly known as “Mom Abel” by many longtime friends and neighbors, her and Dad’s family includes 7 Grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and so many others that she crossed paths with over her lifetime.
Mom worked hard all her life raising a family and caring for her family. A naturally gifted artist, she also enjoyed canning, baking, knitting, and sewing. She was known for her cheeky sense of humor, and she had a lovely smile and a generous nature.
Mom and Dad returned to the Okanagan to enjoy their golden years. Their home was where the family gathered for many summers over the years, mainly in Keremeos and Penticton.
In 2009, Mom wrote out her life story for her family titled “As I Remember It, My Life Story.” The last line states, “So long as I am able, and with God’s help, I will keep going. My life has been beautiful.” We love you so much Mom. Thank you for making our lives beautiful.
