September 17, 1948 – March 4, 2025
Walter Wietzel was born on September 17, 1948, in Edmonton, Alberta, the firstborn of five children to Henry and Esther Wietzel. From a young age, Walter embodied strength, independence, and a deep curiosity about the world. His adventurous spirit led him to travel and work across many parts of the globe, gaining life experience that shaped his resilient character. Among his proudest accomplishments during those early years was earning his pilot’s license, a reflection of his boldness and love of exploration.
Walter’s working life was marked by determination and a tireless work ethic. He began his career doing demanding labor at the Syncrude site in Fort McMurray, then contributed to major earthmoving and construction projects throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon. He spent several years in the North with North American Road Builders, thriving in rugged conditions and always leading by example. His hands were never idle—he built his reputation with integrity, grit, and a commitment to doing things right.
Eventually, Walter settled in Valleyview, Alberta, where his parents and much of his extended family had also chosen to build their lives. There, he laid down roots of his own—both personally and professionally. In August of 1984, he met the love of his life, Kim, who was originally from Haney, B.C. (now known as Maple Ridge). The two shared a deep and lasting connection and were married on May 16, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together, they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and a shared dedication to family and community.
After years in construction, Walter transitioned into entrepreneurship. He opened and operated several secondhand stores before launching “Sir Walter’s,” later rebranded as Valley Video. For over 30 years, he proudly served the Valleyview community—not just as a business owner, but as a friendly face and a pillar of local life.
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Walter’s passing on March 4, 2025, in Kelowna, British Columbia. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, loyal brother, and a true friend to many.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Esther Wietzel, and his nephew Tim Schwartz.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kim Wietzel; his children, Denise Matlock and Clinton Wietzel (Kirsten); his grandchildren, Scott Schell (Kirsten), Taylor, Jacob, and AJ Matlock, and Chorus, Karsyn, and Wilder Wietzel; his great-grandchildren, Hudson and Graham Schell; his siblings, Grace (Ken Schwartz), Joy (Keith Jevning), Jim (Yvonne Wietzel), and Dianne Prasse; many nieces and nephews; and his cherished dog, “She She.”
Walter’s legacy lives on through his family and the countless people whose lives he touched. He will be remembered for his kindness, his fierce loyalty, and his appreciation for life’s simplest pleasures—like a good story, a job well done, and time spent with those he loved most.
His son, Clinton Wietzel—known musically as HazyMADE—plans to honor his father’s memory with a special song and music video, ensuring that Walter’s spirit continues to inspire through music and art.
Walter will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Long live the king.
