Joanna Powell Adams Burt (87) of Marietta, born in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1932, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019 at Tranquility Hospice at Kennesaw Mountain. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Survivors include daughters Julia A. Turner (Michael) and Beverly A. McCall (Murl) as well as sons Drew Adams and David Adams (Deborah). She was the loving grandmother of six including Hannah Sewell (John), Felicia Thompson (Wade), William Turner (Stevie), Nathan Adams (Jane), Jacob McCall (Shea), and Joseph Turner (Ericka). She was also great-grandmother to Joanna, Turner, Asher, and the anticipated Lena. She is survived by her brother John Y. Powell (Betsy) as well as two nieces, Elizabeth Thompson and Stephanie Devereux, and her brother-in-law Maynard F. Adams.
Joanna was preceded in death by her parents Joe John and Eleanor Moore Powell and her first husband of twenty-one years and father of her children, William Elton Adams, Jr. She was also preceded by her second husband, Frank Burt.
A devout Christian and life-long Methodist, Joanna was an extremely faithful member of Kennesaw United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she was a member of the Elton Adams Sunday School Class. Her active involvement included several areas of ministry such as prayer outreach, shut-in visitation, every level of Disciple Bible study, and the United Methodist Women.
Joanna spent most of her childhood living in several cities in North Carolina as her father, a civil engineer for the state government, and family moved from project to project. They finally settled in Raleigh where she met her future husband, Elton Adams. She graduated from Eastern Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree including a certification to teach. After she and Elton were married, they moved to Texas where he served in the Air Force and she taught for a short time before they moved to Charleston, SC. After the arrival of their two daughters, they moved to Marietta, GA where their sons were born. They then moved to the “country” in west Cobb County where she settled into her chosen roles of wife and mother and continued to raise her children, taking an active role in their activities such as scouting, their education, and church. Ever the encourager, she loved her children and grandchildren fiercely and was very proud of them and their accomplishments. Her great-grandchildren were the joy of her last years as they brought happiness and laughter to her life in an assisted living facility.
She will be most remembered for her quiet and gentle spirit and her love and devotion to her Heavenly Father and her Savior Jesus Christ. She continued a very long family legacy of deep and abiding faith; and her humble, Christ-like example touched all who knew her. Her family would especially like to thank the medical personnel and amazing loving staff that cared for her at Atherton Place.
Visitation at Winkenhofer/Pine Ridge Funeral Home will be from 4:00-7:00pm on Thursday, May 30. The family will also greet friends at Kennesaw United Methodist Church beginning at 11:00am on Friday, May 31 with her celebration of life service following in the sanctuary at 1:00. Internment will then take place at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations in her memory be made to MUST Ministries: Save Our Sandwiches (www.mustministries.org).
