Born on April 30, 1951 in Birmingham AL to J.T. Morgan and Helen Dorr, she was the youngest of 3 children. She graduated from Banks High School in 1969 and became a secretary. She was a free spirit, often barefoot and always smiling. In early 1972, she went on a blind date to a Mexican restaurant with a cute, nerdy guy with glasses named Carl. On November 4th of that same year, they were married in her Aunt Dot’s living room. They were married for 35 years until Carl’s death in 2007.
When Jane and Carl were married, she also became a Step-Mom to Carl’s son, Scott and many years later a Mimi to his 3 beautiful children.
Jane spent most of her life in service to others. She always knew how and when to show up for people and she always knew how to make everything feel special. She just had this natural ability to make everything seem fun. Every day was a special occasion for her and it was incredibly easy to get wrapped up in her excitement. She never met a stranger. She didn’t care what you looked like or where you came from. She was generous and kind and so very, very loving. You just wanted to be where she was.
Jane spent her 30’s and 40’s raising her daughter, Jenni. She always had a houseful of Jenni’s friends, they all called her “Mama Jane.” She was an incredibly proud and supportive mom and would no doubt say that being Jenni’s mother was the greatest joy of her life (that is, until she became a grandmother).
Jane was strong in her faith and was an active member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church for most of her life. She and Carl built many special friendships through their involvement with their parish.
Jane loved to travel! Africa, Europe, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, and New England in the fall with her bestie…she loved experiencing the world. But as much as she loved to be on the go, there was nothing she loved more than home. She built a beautiful home that was always warm and so full of love. The doors were rarely locked, she expected you to just come on in. More often than not, there would be candles lit, some good music playing and a fresh pot of coffee made. Almost like she was expecting you, even if she wasn’t. Her favorite place was her front porch overlooking her incredible yard full of heirloom plants and flowers. Something was always blooming. Most of life’s problems were solved on that front porch! Something about that front porch swing just made everything a little better!
In 2006, Jane became a full time Mimi with the birth of Jenni’s son, Cooper. She was an incredible grandmother and for many years, Cooper and Mimi were inseparable. As they both grew older, their relationship moved into something more mature but still beautiful. In April of 2023, she moved in full time with Jenni and Cooper and her last 9 months were filled with his friends in and out of the house, always with a “Bye Mimi” as they would run out the door on their next adventure.
She loved folk music and Fiji water and expensive perfume. She loved Alabama football and no matter how long she had lived in Georgia, Birmingham was always home. She loved Broadway musicals and Christmas and going riding with no real destination in mind.
There is no doubt that Carl was on the front porch of Heaven, ready to welcome her home.
Jane is survived by her daughter Jenni Crase (Lee), her step son, Scott Hauk (Sharon), her grandchildren, Cooper Crase, Sierra Benton, Sawyer Hauk and Skyler Evans, her beloved niece Wanda Sandusky, her best friend Cynthia Crane and several other relatives and close friends.
