Jacksonville, Florida. He was the youngest of 12 siblings (6 boys and 6 girls). Shortly after his birth, Walter’s family moved to St. Mary’s, Georgia. The family later moved to Savannah, Georgia.
Walter was trained in electrical engineering while he was enlisted with the Air Force Reserve. Walter began his career as a television engineer for the local station in Savannah, Georgia. While working there, legend has it that he was instrumental in developing the emergency switchover for broadcast television. Walter moved to Atlanta to take a job with WXIA TV. On one occasion while working at WXIA TV, Walter repaired the antennae that was on the roof on top of the downtown Peachtree Plaza Hotel which at the time was the tallest building in Atlanta. One of his lunch buddies at WXIA was former Falcons running back, Harmon Wages. Unfortunately, Walter did not mention that at the time to his oldest son, a huge Falcons fan. Walter subsequently went to work for Panasonic, and he often traveled to the New York City area and to Japan.
It was in Savannah where he met his Wife, Janet. They were married in 1970, and had two sons, James and Randy. In 1977, Walter and his family moved to Kennesaw, Georgia where they established their home. Whether it was building a fence, renovating a kitchen, working on the roof, or doing some land grading in the creek area, Walter would do these tasks himself.
Walter was a dedicated family man. His youngest son, Randy, is severely mentally disabled. Walter took an early retirement to care for Randy. Walter did everything he could to make sure that Randy was well taken care of and treated with love, kindness and dignity. The family would go on beach vacations to Panama City, and Walter would take his oldest son on trips to Walt Disney World and Washington, D.C. For fun, Walter would lift weights, swim in the family pool, and go on family hikes at Kennesaw Mountain Park. In his spare time, he liked to read books on physics and advanced mathematics. He was a proud grandfather to his only grandchild, Julie Kamilla Luttrell.
Walter is survived by his two sons James Luttrell of Smyrna, and Phillip “Randy” Luttrell of Augusta; his granddaughter, Julie; and his daughter in-law Stephany; and his sister Edna May Diamond.
