DOB: January 11, 1942 - Sept 25, 2026
Though our hearts are saddened by the loss of Anna Zurkan - mother, grandmother and friend, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and the lasting memories Anna leaves behind.
Anna was born in Bonnyville Alberta to Louise and Yvonne Halley. She moved to the Kenora area in 1953 and grew up on Black Sturgeon Lake with her siblings George Halley, Gene Halley and Donna Halley. She finished high school and attended nursing school in Thunder Bay which she graduated in 1960 as a Registered Nurse Assistant. She was married to John Zurkan on November 5, 1960 and remained in Kenora raising their 4 children while working for the school board as a custodian for 25 years from 1977 to 2001. Anna was a devoted provider who worked hard to ensure her family was cared for and never went without. She always worked more than her full-time job and picked up odd jobs using her talent as an excellent seamstress and of course her many cleaning jobs that kept her busy while making lifelong friends along the way. She would make and sell perogy's and cabbage rolls, always making sure she made enough to give to her children and grandchildren. Anna treasured her family who meant more to her than any money or wealth could bring. She loved canning, picking blueberries, fishing - even if she didn’t catch anything, and found peace in her garden, growing flowers and her orchid collection. She would give most of what she made and grew away as she knew how much her family looked forward to getting some of mom's special homemade goodies. She enjoyed time with her friends going to the casino and travelling with the Seniors Bus Tours. She loved to travel anywhere and enjoyed trips to Mexico, Dominican, Alaska, East Coast and always looked forward to going to Alberta to visit family and attend family reunions. She spent many hours volunteering at the Legion for all the events they hosted. She retired in 2001 but in usual Anna fashion continued to work until 2024 when she finally officially retired at 82 years old.
She leaves to mourn her daughter Coreena (Dan), granddaughter Chelsey, granddaughter Alyssa (Aaron) and great granddaughter Freya. Son Audie (Margaret) grandson Nathan, granddaughter Vienna (Travis) and great grandson Kane. Son Todd (Sandra) grandson Blaine (Michelle), and grandson Owen (Kyra). Grandson Cody (Riley), great grandson Jaxon and great granddaughter Adalyn and her only remaining sibling brother Gene Halley (Wanda)
She is predeceased by her parents Louise and Yvonne Halley and mother-in law Rose Zurkan, husband John Zurkan and youngest son Dale Zurkan. As well as her brother George Halley, sister Donna Halley, niece Susan Halley, and great nephew Jonny Halley.
Mom leaves many extended family, cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends too many to mention who she adored and loved with all her heart. She will be forever missed and we will always remember her love of life and the joy she got from all of life's simple pleasures.
Mom…
You have left our lives,
But you will
NEVER
Leave our hearts
