How do we capture a lifetime into words and do you justice, Dad and Papa?
Dad was born on August 5, 1931 in Kenora and grew up in the Rideout where he attended Northward School. In 1951 he graduated from Lakewood Secondary District High School in Commercial General Business. From 1952-1957, Dad was employed by CP Rail as a brakeman, and later in 1957 began his employment with the Town of Kenora Utilities as a journeyman lineman. In 1983, he was promoted to line foreman and in 1986 was promoted to line superintendent. In 1991, after 34 years of dedicated service, Dad retired. Through his work, Dad enjoyed many lifelong friendships which greatly enriched his life.
Our parents were married at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Kenora on July 6, 1957 and made the Rideout their lifelong home. Together they raised their five children and enjoyed many friendships with their neighbouring families.
As a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church for many years, Dad served on the church council and dedicated many hours maintaining the church interior and grounds.
Dad had an immense passion for sports. His hockey involvement started as a teenager when he played for the Rideout Ramblers and continued well into his senior years. The love of the game drew him to coaching which started in the 1950’s with the Rideout Bantam B’s. Dad excelled at baseball which he started playing in the 1950’s as a back catcher for the Norman Cubs. Dad’s baseball talent was even recognized by a scout for the New York Yankees inviting him to consider playing professionally. Dad also enjoyed playing horseshoes with his family, friends and co-workers and showcased his talent at the Agricultural Fair for many years. Along with his membership at the Kenora Legion, Dad developed a new interest in the game of darts, which he participated in for over thirty years. Following his retirement in 1991, Dad added curling and golf to his sporting portfolio.
Some of Dad’s additional favourite past-times were blueberry picking, which began as a young boy and continued well into his eighty’s. Dad’s favourite boardgame was cribbage, which he enjoyed playing (and winning) with his children and grandchildren. Many fond memories were also created with summers spent at the Jardine family camp on Blindfold Lake. Dad and Mom lit up dance floors wherever there was music and the company of family and friends.
Dad was actively involved behind the scenes supporting and believing in the many worthwhile causes Mom committed her time to for over fifty years.
Without question, the most important part of Dad’s life was his family. Dad’s relationship with each of his children and grandchildren was special and unique, and he was extremely proud of each and everyone of us. Our lives have been forever touched by Dad’s devotion, strength, patience, sense of humour, quick wit, quiet presence, and the unconditional love he showered on all of us.
Our family extends our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Maxine Carlisle, Susan Lacroix (ParaMed RN), Tara Vandall (ParaMed RN), Alexis Peplinski (Palliative Care Nurse Practioner, Kenora) and Leah Habinski (Palliative Care Nurse Practioner, Sioux Lookout/Dryden) for their role in allowing us to honour Dad’s desire to spend his final days at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 11:00am at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with Pastor Borchardt of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church officiating. A luncheon will be served following the service. A family interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations would greatly be appreciated in Bert’s memory to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation Tree of Life, the Alzheimer Society Kenora/Rainy River Districts or It’s a Dog’s Life.
