She is survived by her caring husband Wendell; her sons Kevin/Lizzy, Chad/Shannon their children Cooper Marin and Franny; daughter Wendy/Hal Wendy’s children Rob/Ashley their boys Walker & Ellis; Jori and her son Josh; Hal’s children Tessa, Nathan/Olena their children Milana and Nolan; Spencer and his children Cally-Ann, Quinn, Mannix and Shanoah; her brothers Duncan, David, Dickie, Alan (Carol) and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Phil and Mabel Markham, her in-laws Carl and Blanche Walsten, her sisters Betty Lindsay and Hazel Major and her brother Phil Markham. She never got over the loss of her siblings; she missed them deeply and took each of their passings very hard.
Carol and Wendell got married in December of 1961 at the Luthern Church and soon after started their family. Carol was a devoted wife and mother; she was embarrassingly proud of her 3 kids and all her grandchildren.
In 1964 Carol and Wendell built their home on 5th Avenue South and over the years they did many upgrades and improvements. Carol was the foreman and Wendell did all the work himself. She was very determined and there was no telling her no.
We took many family vacations; back in the days before the internet, she did research and decided what sights we were going to see and what route we would take; always ending up at Aunty Hazel’s who lived in El Paso Texas then Rosiclare Illinois and finally Kelowna BC. We have very fond memories of our summer vacations. She was the navigator and Dad did ALL the driving.
She had a high level of common sense and was intelligent in her own way with a good judge of character. She passed these instincts on to her kids and raised them well. She had many passions: she was an excellent cook and took great pride and care in her home. She was an extremely talented knitter and made beautiful, hand-crafted sweaters, and afghans with intricate patterns. She taught herself to sew and went through a phase where she sewed her own clothing. She was always very well dressed and loved the colour red. Later she took up quilting and one of the spare bedrooms was turned into her sewing room. If she was going to do it, she did it well. She loved dolls and had an extensive doll collection.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pinecrest for the care and compassion they provided to Carol over the past year. Special thanks to Brenda Robertson, who happened to be the charge nurse whenever a crisis arose.
