July 7, 1954 – March 11, 2017
With his wife by his side, after a courageous battle, Charles (Charlie) Hagar, a resident of Birchwood Terrace passed away on March 11, 2017, at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, at the age of 62 years.
He leaves to mourn, his wife of 31 years, Lila, his brother George and family, sister in law Karen Bluebird and family, numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends in the community.
He is predeceased by both his parents.
Charlie was born in Red Lake, but called Kenora his home. He and his wife Lila met over 35 years ago at a social gathering and became fast friends and soul mates. The two married in a small ceremony and remained together for over 31 years. Each year, /Charlie insisted on celebrating their wedding anniversary in style, inviting all their close friends, dressing in their finest and breaking bread at their current favorite restaurant.
He was a long time member of Buck's Brigades and before retiring was often seen at an assortment of events, down at the Harborfront, decked out in his orange and yellow vest. He was a hard worker and enjoyed being a part of Buck’s labour force, greeting people, setting up tables and chairs and cleaning up everything afterwards. He and his wife liked attending events at the Nechee Center and he always appreciated their support.
Charlie’s warm heart, smiling face and generous spirit will live on in the memories of those who cared for him the most. Charlie was a natural caregiver. He cared for his wife, who has a physical impairment and high medical needs, in their own home for as long as he was able, before falling physically ill himself. The two both moved to Birchwood together, sharing a room. Charlie was not only a loving and caring partner, who supported his wife, but also a generous community member, often opening up his home to people, never turning away anyone in need.
The wake will begin at 12:00 noon, Monday, March 20th 2017 with the service to follow Tuesday, March 21st 2017 at 1:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church, 510 Second Street South, with burial to follow at Lake of the Woods Cemetery.
