Dorothy Mary Gledhill passed away on January 15, 2015 at Pinecrest Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel, her father and mother, William and Harriette Deeming, four brothers, and four sisters.
She leaves behind her son John (Barbara), son Robert (Lana Wong), grandson Brian Gledhill (Michelle), granddaughter Sarah (Steve Craig), great-grandchildren Maximus, Charles and Georgia Gledhill, step-grandchildren David Jordan (Cara) and their children Maeve, Declan, and Lennon, Simon Jordan (Nancy Ferreira), and Stephen Jordan (Heather Flood).
Dorothy was born in the Deeming family home in West Bromwich, England on October 5, 1911. Upon leaving school, she began working while living with her family. During World War II, she worked as a seamstress at a tailor's, producing uniforms. Many a sleepless night in a bomb shelter was followed by a full day of work. While helping out with a hospitality committee for allied soldiers in Britain she met Samuel Gledhill of the Royal Canadian Engineers. After a few meetings and some letters, they got to know each other well enough to get married at the end of the war.
Dorothy came to Canada as a war bride in 1946 on the Cunard liner Aquitania, followed by a long train ride to Kenora, where she was met by Sam, the only person she knew in the entire country.
Dorothy and Sam set up house in Kenora where they raised their children and took part in the life of the community. They were founding members of the Seniors Centre and the G-Clef Choir. They enjoyed travelling, taking the family on many trips by car, ship, and train. In later years they participated in Seniors' coach trips to the east and west coasts. In 1970, they took their only trip back to England to see Dorothy's family - an emotional experience for her.
The family thanks all of the people at Pinecrest Home, Lake of the Woods Hospital, and Rivera for their care and thoughtfulness for Dorothy. We also thank everyone in the community who shared their time with her.
A memorial service will take place at Pinecrest Home on Monday, January 19 at 1:30 P.M. followed by a lunch.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Pinecrest Home.
