Ethel Goodwill
With family by her side, Ethel Goodwill, a longtime resident of Pinecrest Home for the Aged, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 07, 2017 at the age of 100.
Ethel was born on January 7, 1917. She was predeceased by her first husband Bill Sinclair, her second husband George Goodwill, her parents Swan Pontus and Marta Olson, her brothers Albert, John Helmar (T.V. Ole), Ed, and sister Svea Mayne (August 2016), nephews Robert Olson, Murray Sinclair, and niece Carole Dempster.
Ethel is survived by her children John Sinclair (Linda), Doug Sinclair (Monique), David Sinclair (Tina), as well as her grandchildren Johnny Sinclair, Tamara Sutherland (Wade), Ryan Sinclair (Kristina), and Lindsay Sinclair (Devin), great grandchildren Mikayla, Sara, Liam, and Aubrey.
Also left to mourn are nephews and nieces, Gordon Olson, Joanne Johnson (Tom), Jim Olson (Carol), Ellie Bond (Bob), Peter Olson (Kathy), Cam Sinclair (Sylvia), Cindy Lindenberg (Gord), LeeAnn Cooper, and Karen Empey-Nicholson.
Ethel grew up as the youngest of the children of Swan and Marta Olson from Olson’s Ice Cream Parlour which also was the original Coca Cola bottling plant for Kenora. When she was young, Ethel was known as a terrific figure skater in Kenora. She worked at the Royal Bank in her younger years and after Bill’s passing she worked at the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and Paper Company and then at the Kenricia Hotel for many years. Mom was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and friends. She loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor. After her second husband George’s passing she would remark that she must have been hard on her men. Ethel loved spending time at the family cottage on Coney Island and resided in the same house in Lakeside from the time of her first marriage until moving to Pinecrest in 2007. Mom loved to play bridge and was often found hosting for her many friends at the house. She was involved with the Lions Club and loved to keep very active. Mother was also known as the person who won the contest in the naming of Miikana Way.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Pinecrest Home for their care and compassion for Ethel. Our hearts are broken and we will miss her dearly. A family service will be held this summer to celebrate her life well lived. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Kenora Museum or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
