Gloria Watterson

September 24, 1931 - February 14, 2017

Gloria passed away peacefully at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home on February 14, 2017 at age 85.

Born in Winnipeg on September 24, 1931, the second of five children of Karl and Klara Kuhn, Gloria grew up on the family farm near Russell, Manitoba. She attended teachers' college in Winnipeg and taught in small prairie towns before taking a position in Kenora. She shared an apartment above Tilley's Pharmacy with another teacher and dear friend, Elsie (Anderson) Fahlgren, before marrying Jack Watterson on July 18, 1959. Gloria returned to the career she loved when her children were young, working at Central School, North Ward, and Pinecrest School until retiring in 1993. She and Jack were avid travelers and active in their later years, continuing to golf, curl, cross-country ski, cheer at grandson Ryne's hockey games, and go boating on Lake of the Woods until Jack's health declined.

After Jack's passing in 2010, Gloria remained active in outdoor sports and community groups including G Clef Choir, Retired Teachers of Ontario, Scottish Country Dancing, and many charity fundraising endeavours. A lifelong music lover, she could always be found at local concerts and theatre events, and never missed the annual Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concert at the Harbourfront.

She was predeceased by her parents and brother Waldemar, and by her beloved husband, Jack. Gloria will be dearly missed by her son Bruce and wife Audrey (Kenora), grandson Ryne (Vancouver), daughter Joan and husband Harry (Salt Spring Island), sisters Lily (Vancouver), Alma (Honolulu) and Annette (Cathedral City, California), nieces and nephews around the continent, and many good friends.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks for all the caring and support of friends and family over the past year. Special thanks to all of Gloria's caregivers from homecare services (especially Barb, Bonnie, Shirley and Sarah), her doctors and the dedicated staff at Birchwood Terrace.

A Come and Go Celebration will be held at Knox United Church on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
