Mrs. Helen Heaslip Robertson

A Graveside Service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 21, 2009With family at her side, Helen Stuart Robertson, passed away quietly on November 11, 2009 in Kenora, Ontario at the age of 94. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, Otto and Kate Heaslip, and by her loving husband, Joseph Murray Robertson. She will be deeply missed by her children: Katherine (Bill) Downey, Libbie (Paul) Sellors, John (Masumi) Robertson and Paul (Virginia) Robertson; and by her 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Helen was born on November 30, 1914 in Dauphin, Manitoba where she spent a wonderful childhood with many family outings in the Riding Mountains. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in 1935 from United College, University of Manitoba ( U of M ) and her Bachelor of Library Science in 1936 from the University of Toronto. During her career she has lectured at the U of M, appeared on television and radio, served as a story consultant for CBC’s School Broadcasts, wrote a Winnipeg Tribune column entitled “the Children’s Bookshelf”, chaired the Canadian Library Association - Children’s Section and established the library at Saint John’s Cathedral Boys’ school. She retired as Children’s Librarian for the City of Winnipeg in 1979 but continued for a number of years to lecture for the University of the North, visiting many northern Manitoba communities, as well as pursuing her fine art studies at the U of M. After Joe’s death in 1974, she continued to travel extensively until her mid-eighties. She had a passion for flowers which received much attention in her gardens and in her photo albums that chronicled family life. It was always the family that was Helen’s first love and priority; on whom she lavished her love and wisdom and to whom she imparted her high values and deep understanding. The family has lost its mainstay.
