Howard Phinney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Howard Elgin Phinney on August 20th, 2026 at the age of 79. Howard was born on September 2nd, 1946 and is predeceased by his parents Ingibjorg (Imba) and Elgin Phinney.

Howard was a resident of Redditt, ON and will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his siblings Geogina (late Wally), Tom (Connie), Robin (Jean), Stan (Nancy), Herman (Ellen) and Sheldon (Betty).

Howard, or "Howie" as he was affectionately known by family and friends, leaves behind his children and their families: Deena (Jorge), David (Debbie) and Trevor (Michelle). He was also a proud grandfather to Bradley (Ariel), Ashley (Keegan), Julia, Matias, Xavier, Brynja, Gino, Farika, Jamian, Shirley and one great grandson, Dacoda.

Howard spent 18 years as an LCBO manager and later worked as a construction superintendent, dedicating his career to hard work until retiring at the age of 65.

Howie found his greatest peace in nature. Whether casting a line into the water, heading out on a hunting trip, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the wilderness, he felt more at home outdoors. His beloved cottage at Stanzhikimi Lake, where he spent more than 40 years creating memories with family and friends, held a special place in his heart and became a gathering place filled with laughter, stories and tradition.

In his early twenties, Howie discovered a lifelong passion for the sport of Judo. His hard work culminated in earning his USJA Black Belt with the International Judo Federation (IJF) in 1980. He trained and coached many Judo champions and he cherished the stories told through Judo, believing that every match, lesson, and laugh shared on the mats kept its memories alive for generations to come.

Howard had a wonderful sense of humor and always seemed to have a funny saying ready for any occasion. His playful one-liners, clever observations, and his ability to make people laugh brought warmth to everyday moments and will be remembered with countless smiles.

In keeping with his wishes, Howie will be surrounded by friends and family who loved him dearly as his ashes are spread at his beloved cabin on Stanzhikimi Lake at a later date.
