Joanne was born in Tambov, Russia to John D. and Helen Penner. They immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in Drake Saskatchewan. Joanne moved to Kenora in her teens and met the love of her life Frank Kowalik. They were married in 1939. They had two sons Ronald and Raymond.
During her 104 years of life, she worked numerous jobs including Eaton's, The Shoe Shop in the mall, Smitty's and retired from Chicken Chef where everyone knew her as the lady behind the till.
Joanne was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing with the choir and made many lifelong friends including the Sunday lunch group. In her younger years she looked forward to attending church functions and helping when needed.
Family was everything to her. She attended all the activities she could. She cherished holiday dinners that brought the whole family together. We will never forget her ambrosia salad!
Joanne was predeceased by her husband Frank, sons Ron and Ray, daughter in law Isabel, granddaughter Carla and great grandson Cameron as well as her sisters and brothers.
Left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren Ken (Nadine), Candace and Cindy, Jeff, Joey, Carla's husband Glen, and daughter in law Judy as well as Delaney, Brandon and Dallas. She will be missed by all her great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Pinecrest Home for the Aged especially the unit 1 staff.
