Margaret Eleanor Hager
April 9th, 1919 - July 19th, 2015
Margaret Eleanor Hager passed away in her sleep on July 19th, 2015 at Pinecrest, Kenora. Margaret was born April 9th, 1919 near Lundar , MB.
Mom grew up on the family farm where she very early learned a strong work ethic. She aspired to become a teacher but wages were extremely low so she moved to Winnipeg to obtain work.
She married Andrew Hager on July 25th, 1941 in Winnipeg and came to Kenora for their honeymoon. They moved to Madsen, On, a frontier mining community in the Red Lake area where there was no running water, washing machines or refridgerators. However, life was good, neighbours were friendly and making new friends was easy.
In September 1947, the family moved to Starratt-Olsen where they opened a small general store and while Andrew was working at the mine, Mom raised two children and ran the store. Business increased and so over the years they moved to larger facilities and finally bought the Hudson Bay Store located at Madsen. When the mine closed at Starratt, Dad was able to help with the store. Together they built a successful business. Mom often worked late into the evening finalizing the accounts for payday. They built a home in Red Lake but continued to operate the store at Madsen.
In retirement, Mom and Dad finally got to relax, and enjoyed traveling to places like Hawaii and Alaska. In 2006, Mom moved to Kenora to be close to family after Dad passed away.
Mom brought out the best in everyone around her. She demonstrated a gentle patient kind of love, dedication to family, welcoming hospitality and support that will be forever appreciated and missed. Friends will remember her as a caring, thoughtful and kind person.
Mom was predeceased by son Kenneth in 1996, and husband Andrew in 2004, her brother Clarence Johnson and wife Viola, sister-in-law Annie Langstrom and husband Lawrence. Left to mourn are daughter Marlene and husband Bob Gordon daughter-in-law Jean Hager, grandchildren Bobbi-Lynn Gordon, Ryan(Charlene Trudel) Gordon, Lori-Dawn(Charlie) Madden ,and Dean Hager (Karisia), great-grandchildren Shane and Dylan Harty, Avery and Sylvia Madden, sisters Florence Ferris and family and Hazel (Tony) Petovar and family.
