Marilyn (Marlene) Doris Lyhkun

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom Marilyn (Marlene) on Sunday April 26, 2026.

Mom has left us with many memories of her laughter, her amazing cooking and baking which showed in her love of hosting meals in her home. She took pride in planning the details of how and what she would cook and enjoyed seeing her loved ones sitting at her table. She was famous for her amazing apple pies and perogies, (there’s wasn’t much that she couldn’t cook). She held strong in her Catholic beliefs, her love of music (especially a good Ukrainian polka), and her generosity.

Mom was born near Canora Saskatchewan on the family homestead. She often joked she’d prefer to clean, bake and cook than be outside doing the harder chores. She left that to her sisters. Once married, she moved to Red Lake ON where she raised her family. She later relocated to Kenora ON.

She was an active member of her church, her faith was important to her, as were her close friends, you all know who you are. We thank you for your friendship and all the blessings you bestowed upon her. Each of you held a special place.

She is survived by her daughter Lynette (Mike Durand), son Darren (Carrie), grandson Braxten Durand (who was the treasure of her heart), step grandson Troy (Jessica) and their children Scarlet and Lynx, her sister Debbie Kowalchuk (Corrie) and many nephews, niece and cousins.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Nellie and Joe Zayshley, sisters Joyce Price (George Potter), Shirley Matsalla (Lawrence), nephew Darcy Matsalla and her husband Ormy Lyhkun.

We would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and numerous health care providers, first responders and all those who assisted her and us with kindness and compassion.

Mom did not want a big funeral service and respectfully we will have a private service at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you say a holy Mass for her, or provide an act of kindness, and those who chose can make a donation to a children’s organization of your choice.
