It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Mary Cowley, of Whitefish Bay First Nation, whom passed away peacefully on December 8, 2020, at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, at the age of 78 years.
She is survived by brother Fred Cowley; Nephews Melvin, Everett, Joey, Clayton, Walter, Pete, Darrell, David; nieces Sandra, Carol, Glenda, Leona, Sherry, Lorne, Rhonda. Racky. and many more that are too numerous to mention; Grandchildren Terri (Lyle), Cheralle (Luke), Delvin, Tia, and Morley; her great-grandchildren Tyrhia, Zavius, Aubrielle, Keziah, Caison, Olivia, and Alexander; and extended family from Hollow Water, MB and Whitedog F.N. whom she all loved very much.
She is predeceased by parents Mary Paypompee Sr. and Jack Cowley Sr., brothers Albert (Evelyn), Jackie, Pete, Jimmy, and John, sisters Isobel, Elsie and Frances. Nieces Norma, and Alma.
Kabutchkwe was born in Kenora, ON and lived in Whitefish Bay First Nation her whole life. She enjoyed her days at the Golden Eagle Casino bingo hall with her brother Freddie. She especially loved to take part in the community’s fun events held for elders. She enjoyed sewing, and playing cards with all her friends. She also liked going to Casino’s. She loved working at the fur factory in Whitefish Bay in the 70’s. She worked at campsites, cleaning cabins in Sioux Narrows. She also took part in cooking at Gill’s Trading Post. Kabutchkwe loved being in the company of all her family and friends, it was never a dull moment. We will all remember her sense of humour and all the laughter she brought to each and one of us.
The family would like to send thanks to Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre of Kenora, and staff of Naotkamegwanning’s Elder Center.
If anyone would like to pay their respects, a viewing will be held at the Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre in Kenora on Thursday, December 10, 2020 from 2 - 4pm, with 15 min time slots. Please call ahead to schedule time. Wake services with be held in Whitefish Bay on Friday, December 11, 2020 at 1pm. A Traditional Ceremony will be held the following day, December 12, 2020 at 11am.
