May 28, 1925 – August 26, 2011
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Mary Redden. Mary passed away peacefully on Friday, August 26, 2011, at The Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario with family at her side.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of sixty-four years, Walter Redden. Also predeceasing Mary were her three brothers, Russell, Oscar and Kenny Kennedy together with her sister-in-law Wanda Cormylo.
Left to cherish her memory are three children, Lorne Redden (wife Pat; children Kelly (Matt), Leanne (Carlton), Karen (Pierre), Aletha Henry (husband Tom; children Tracy (Derek), Kathy (Geoff)) and Patricia Olson (husband Brian; children Eric (Lydia), Kurt). Mom was also blessed with 16 great grandchildren, her sisters-in-laws Adelia, Germaine and Mabel plus many nieces and nephews.
Born in Athabaska, Alberta, Mary was proud of starting her young life during the Depression working on the family farm. Throughout her life she kept her family and friends from Alberta close to her heart and was in frequent communication with them.
After moving to Longbow Lake as a young bride in 1946, she was a devoted companion who worked tirelessly to help develop “Redden’s” - the resort that continues to grow for over 65 years. Longbow Lake was often described by Mom as the “best place on earth”. Aside from the beauty of the area, it was the people who made this area precious to her. From all the local residents who demonstrated their affection, concern and friendship to both her and Walter over the years, to the many various friends who were regular visitors to Redden’s, each group contributed to her a feeling of pride when calling Longbow Lake her home.
Mary was an avid golfer, curler and card player. Whereas she always possessed a competitive spirit, it was with great joy that she experienced these activities with good friends. Her exuberant laughter and strong loyalty will be remembered by many good friends in both the Kenora area and in Florida.
Mom was always eager to assist with any project that assisted the development of the Longbow Lake community and enjoyed promoting and participating in the Longbow Lake Fire Fighter’s Yard Sale. Throughout her entire life in the Kenora area, she was a devoted member of the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, The Catholic Woman’s League, The Kenora Golf & Country Club and the Kenora Curling Club. She believed strongly in contributing to the Lake of the Woods Hospital and a wide variety of other worthwhile causes in the area.
The family would like to express their many thanks to the outstanding care Mom received at the Lake of the Woods Hospital, especially to the kind and considerate attention given to her by the Ward 2 nurses. We also want to extend our sincere appreciate for the dedicated attentive care given to Mom by the medical team of Doctors Wehner, Kroeker and Weibe.
A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Thursday, September 1st, 2011 at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 am with Father Rudy Manaloto officiating. Donations in her memory can be made to Lake of the Woods District Hospital at 21 Sylvan St. W., Kenora, ON, P9N 3W7, or a charity of one’s choice.
