It is with devastated hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Michalchuk, aged 39, on the morning of July 18, 2026. Mikey passed away peacefully at home, out of the hospital, exactly where he wanted to be.
Mikey was born in Kenora, Ontario on October 20, 1986. He attended elementary schools, Keewatin Public, Evergreen and Pinecrest, and Beaver Brae Secondary high school in Kenora, where he made lifelong friends. After high school he obtained his heavy equipment certification and enjoyed his job working for Pioneer Construction for 17 years, with Dave Bain always by his side. On the weekends he enjoyed having Amiks with his best and most treasured friends Paul Wilson, Mike Rapinda, and Jordan Poschner.
In the summer of 2007, while working at Pioneer, Mike met the love of his life, Robyn. He liked to tell everyone the story of when he first noticed the cute flagger in the pink hard hat. In 2009, after a couple years of friendship Mike and Robyn began dating, and in 2017 they were married. Together they always looked forward to summer get togethers with Shantel, Alex, Brandi, Andrea, Darryl and Mike.
Anyone who knew Mikey would say that there was nowhere he would rather be than outdoors with his dad. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, and deer and grouse hunting. Whether or not he’d admit Robyn was the better shot was always up for debate, but somehow, he’d always end up cleaning the birds and filleting the fish.
Mike was predeceased by his grandparents, Gerry and Sereetha Rugg, Dido Steven Michalchuk, Uncle Eugene Michalchuk, Uncle Matt Cederwall; Robyn's father Gary Hertz and her grandparents Emile and Bernice Degagne.
He will be forever loved and deeply missed by his loving wife, Robyn Marie Michalchuk (née Hertz); his father, Melvin Michalchuk; mother, Robin Lundgren; his Baba, Olga Michalchuk; his siblings, Christina Murray, Troy Lundgren and Chrissy Scott and Evy Cameron. His aunts and uncles, John and Judy Roos and Stella Cederwall; Robyn's mother Angela Degagne and brother Jason Hertz; his nieces and nephews Keegan, Nathan, Gareth, Kyra, Gweneth, Emrik, Ruby and Theo, Savannah, Jesus, and little Davion. As well as a large extended family, whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Mike will be remembered for his kindness, easygoing nature, sense of humor, and quiet generosity. He was at peace on the water and in the woods and was the kind of person that people enjoyed being around. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Donations in Mike's memory may be made to the Cancer Care Department at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Faghih, NP Laura Hendren and NP Mike Limerick, for their care, compassion, and support. All of the Nurses at LWDH who cared for Mike during ER visits, admissions you were true blessings at very difficult times. Tina, Hailley, Steph and Katherine in the Chemotherapy Department, thank you for keeping Mike smiling and laughing through it all.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Robyn and Michael's Residence on August 3, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
