With his family by his side, Patrick, also known as “Paddy” to his family and childhood friends, passed away at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on Tuesday August 25, 2026. He was 81 years old.

He was born and raised in Couchiching First Nation and spent the last 43 years in Kenora where he built a life with Lillian. As the youngest child and longest surviving member of his family, he is the last of their generation to make the final journey back to his parents and siblings. We know they are welcoming him with so much happiness.

Patrick was predeceased by his parents Ansel and Veronica, and his siblings Jane, Dorothy, Priscilla, Larry, Wilbert, and his half siblings Martin, Gilbert, Lewiso, Leonard, Emerick, William (Mutto) and Mary.

He is also predeceased by his daughter Shannon Shannacappo, granddaughters Jennifer and Jessica Perrault, great-grandson Tristan, and his step-daughter Lorraine Cobiness.

Patrick is survived by Lillian, his wife of 38 years. His daughters Michelle (Lucien) and Tanya Perrault, his step-daughters Linda, Leanne and Tracey Cobiness, and step-son Junior Cobiness. His grandchildren Matthew and Eric; Camden and Jayden; Courtney, Cassidy and DJ; Hunter, Nick and Alex; Shyanne and Jordan; Madison, Sydney and Ronni; Talia and Bryston. His great-grandchildren Jennette, Matthew and Trey; Ally and Aliyah; Cheylene, Shyanne and Devin; Tianna; Miigwan and Carla.

He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends – too many to mention but just know that spoke of everyone often and he loved you all.

Patrick enjoyed spending his time at Club Regent Casino playing keno, fishing at White Dog dam, and partridge hunting. Pat’s family – siblings, nieces, nephews – would also gather at Aunt Dorothy’s house in Fort Frances for weekly food and laugh-filled card games. He cherished those times. In his early years he played Fastball for the Couchiching Raiders as the 1st baseman and played hockey during his Residential School days.

Pat was a very hard worker, and his life took him from being a Firefighter with the MNR, a former band councillor at Couchiching, a Probation Officer in Fort Frances, and an addictions counsellor for Portage la Prairie Friendship Centre. He also worked in family services, first with Weechi’itewin Family Services in Fort Frances, then with Anishinaabe Abinooji Family Services in Kenora. Pat overcame his addictions almost 50 years ago and was very proud to have helped others through their struggles as an Addictions Counsellor at Lake of the Woods District Hospital Community Programs until his retirement 25 years ago.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at LWDH, 2 East, for the compassionate care they provided Patrick. Your kindness is appreciated and will be remembered. We would also like to thank the Alzheimer’s Society and Patterson Memory Clinic for the assistance provided in navigating his disease. Special thank you to Patrick’s nephew Brian, his wife Cathy and Patrick’s niece Sheila for being there with us to offer support during his last days.

Our dad, husband, uncle, cousin and friend Pat was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. We were all very lucky to have been a part of his life and to have had him be a part of ours as well.

Wake services will take place at the community centre in Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation on Friday, August 28th, 2026 beginning at 3:00pm. Traditional services by Elder Gilbert Smith will begin at 10:00 am at Niishaachewan on Saturday, August 29th, 2026 with interment to follow at Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora.
