Anishinabe Qwe
Makwa Nidootem
January 4, 1957 – June 23, 2017
It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of our beloved daughter, sister, aunt and great aunt Agnes Rose Skead (nee Copenace) on Friday June 23rd, 2017 at the age of 60 years old.
Auntie Rose was born January 4, 1957 in Kenora, Ontario to Alec and Mary Copenace, she is survived by her mother Mary, brothers Leslie (Helen) Howard (Sheila) Brian (Donna) Eldon (Pat) Teddy (Darlene) and Galen Copenace; sisters Dorothy (George) Lisa (Trevor) and sisters-in-law Sharon, Susie, Renee, Linda and Karen; and brother-in-law Jake, numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Auntie Rose also leaves behind her special little girls Diane and Donna Strong, and Kynsey Bluebird.
Reunited with Rose is her beloved husband Billy Skead, father Alec Copenace, Uncle Edward Sagate Copenace, niece Veronica Marie, and nephew Howie Jr.
Rose was very passionate in her volunteer work in her home community of Naotkamegwanning, launching the coordination of the OSPCA program visits; volunteering with programs such as A Dogs life, Beat the Heat, facilitator and a strong advocate for the Listening to One another Program. Rose was employed with Noatkamegwanning Health Services as the Circle of Hope and Healing Coordinator, also sat on numerous boards such as the Noatkamegwanning Education Board, WNHAC Board, a member of the Community Mental Health Team, volunteered with the community pow wow committee, and sat on council for Naotkamegwanning. Rose had many interests and hobbies, one that mounted the most was the time she took to spend with her many nieces and nephews and their families. She loved her fishing, camping, travelling, attending powwows, she loved her country music mainly Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, and the cutest of them all was playing her Super Mario Brothers.
The Family would like to say Miigwetch to Dr. Pederson, Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Noatkamegwanning Prevention Services, Health Services, Shelly Tom & the Kenora Catholic School Board, Sandra Medicine, Theresa Girou, Stephanie Bird, Noatkamegwanning Education Authority, Elder Dennis Black, Noatkamegwanning Paramedics, and the community of Naotkamegwanning.
Those that knew her well will Agree Rose has left a profound legacy of her unconditional love for everyone; always there for us when we needed her wisdom and understanding. She shared, promoted and role modeled from her heart, the beautiful gifts of her cultural way of life. She knew and practiced the warmth and love of an authentic Anishinabe, and that is how we will remember her.
Traditional Services will be held at the Naotkamegwanning Health Services building on Monday June 26, 2017 followed by the traditional funeral services on Tuesday June 27, 2017 at 9 am officiated by Elder Dennis Black of Niacatchewenin.
