Born on January 16, 1933 in Canton, China, Sam moved to Canada as a teenager working for a short time in Winnipeg before moving to Kenora. In Kenora, Sam worked with his father at Bamboo Gardens (currently The Plaza), then at the Panda Cafe (currently Hing’s Cafe) before moving onto the Kenricia Hotel and then working for Brian and Linda Biggar at Biggar’s in the Kenricia, where he stayed until his retirement.
While at the Kenricia, Sam became well known for his Prime Rib, his Caesar salad dressing and his famous Kenricia buns. To this day his children still make those delicious buns.
Sam married Lena Gim Woo on February 2, 1956. They lived in a small apartment for the first few years of their marriage before moving to the house on Second Street South in 1962 where he lived for over 60 years making great friends among his longtime neighbors. In his younger years, Sam enjoyed fishing with his friends Gin, Soon, Hing, Ken, Ham and Bobby. They would fish until they caught their limit, enjoy a delicious shore lunch at one of the many islands on Lake of the Woods, then fish again before calling it a day. Sam’s love of fishing continued well into his retirement.
After retiring, Sam enjoyed the company of his children and grandchildren, often going on adventurous vacations including dim sum in Toronto and Vancouver, touring the glaciers in the Columbia Ice fields, the rides and shows at Disney World, an Alaskan cruise, sunning on the beaches of Antigua and wading in the warm surf of Hawaii.
Sam was a quiet man who enjoyed a long and happy life. He spent this last year at the wonderful community of Pinecrest enjoying his ice cream, chocolate milk and Nevada tickets and speaking often of the great baths he had in the big tub.
Sam was predeceased by his wife Lena, his father Sam, his uncle Charlie, sister-in-law Mei and brother Downey.
Leaving to mourn him are his four children, Lana (Robert), Sandra (Roy), Shirley (Ron), and Terry (Heidi) grandchildren Thomas, Taylor, Tyler, Aliya, and Samantha, brother Bob Wong, sister-in-law Olinda Wong, nephews Raymond (Josephine) and family, Tom (Brenda) and family, Jim (Shannon) and family, Bob Jr (Alison) and family, Ken (Amber) and family, Peter and niece Bonnie (Dennis), special extended family Hing and Harlan Choo and family, Sunny and Diane Wu and family, Carolyn and Richard Elliott and family and many long-time friends.
