Shirley Evelyna Tivy (nee Whiteman)
December 23, 1934-June 09, 2014
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley on Monday, June 9, 2014 with her family by her side.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 62 years, Brian, daughters Cheryl (Harry) Green, Janice (Ray) Dilk, and son Michael (Karen). Mourning their grandmother are Casey Green, Mike (Lauren) Green, Kris (Tavia) Tivy, Ian Tivy and great granddaughter Reese Tivy; step grandchildren Neal (Yoshie) Dilk, Janis (Sean) Foley, Wendy (Jeff) Memka and great step grandchildren Phoebe and Aidan Dilk, Liam, Erin and Dylan Foley and Nolan Memka. Mom is also survived by her sister Joyce Kirkoski, sister in law Betty (Mihlan) Cawston and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Anne Whiteman, brother Jack Whiteman, brother in law Morgan Tivy, sister in law Winona (Henry) Morrisette and brother in law Bernard Kirkoski.
Mom was born in Kenora and developed a love of the lake from an early age. Growing up she spent many a summer at her Grandmother’s camp at Willard Lake. She met Dad at a roller skating rink and it wasn’t long after that they married and started a family. Summers were spent down at Willard or boating, fishing and tenting on Lake of the Woods. She also enjoyed playing Ladies Softball with “The Blue Jeans” in summer and skipped a curling team in the winter where her team got an “eight-ender”.
In 1969, Mom and Dad bought their little piece of paradise-Tivy’s Island on Lake of the Woods. Family was everything to Mom and over the years the cabin was always full of family and friends. The island was a perfect place to enjoy one of her favourite activities-fishing. She would often go off by herself in her little aluminum boat with a 6 horse Johnson and perhaps a couple of refreshments tucked into her green purse, with Snoopy in the bow.
Mom loved to travel. Dad and Mom spent extended vacations in Cuba, Barbados, Mexico, Portugal, Morocco, Arizona and shorter trips to the Dominican Republic. In later years, health problems made travel difficult but with her optimistic view of life, she continued to renew her passport and pick up travel brochures.
When dad retired Mom and dad moved to Rainy River for a number of years where they made many new friends with whom they frequently enjoyed “happy hour”. Their almost daily trips to do some cross-border bargain hunting was one of Mom’s favourite past-times.
Upon their return to Kenora, they settled into a nice home on Sixth Avenue South, where we enjoyed many family dinners celebrating birthdays, Christmases and other special occasions.
We would like to thank all of the wonderful people who made Mom’s last years so comfortable. The personal care givers who were like family; the hospital staff including respiratory and physio; Jan Landsiedel; Char and Andrea for being there for Mom (and us); and most of all our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Beveridge. You went above and beyond for Mom. She loved your visits and humour and told us we couldn’t eat the black ju-jubes because they were for you. Thank you so much.
Mom was such a amazing woman. Her compassion for people and her love of her family knew no bounds. Her strength, determination and faith kept her with us for a few extra cherished years. We are so blessed to have had her in our lives.
We love you Mom and miss you so very much.
