It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend Steven Michael Indian on August 21, 2026 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, ON. surrounded by his family, his mother Isabelle, sister Lisa, Aunt Irene and son Anthony.

Steven, age 50 was born on February 5, 1976 in Fort Frances, ON to parents, Isabelle and Edmund Indian.

He grew up in Onigaming with the Indian Family, Kelly Family, Allan Family, McCready Family, and Shebagegit Family. As a young boy he visited his Lavand Family in Wauzhusk Onigum. Steven also grew up in Naongashiing First Nation with his Handorgan Family Arlene and brother Jaysen. Steven has 7 children Theron, Stephanie, Anthony. Neil (Janay), Jayla and their sister Purity and Mikeala.

He also has 8 grandchildren, Jamie, Silas, Lucy, Jeremiah, Shane, Sky, Serenity, Hunter, River-Robert.

Steven is survived by his mother, Isabelle Indian. His sister Lisa (Eric), nieces Allysa and Lauren.

Arlene(Mother), his brother Jaysen (Violet) and other nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren.

Aunties Lorraine McCready and Family. Lois and the Allan Family, Leona Kelly and Family, Sandra Indian and Family. Joanne Indian and Lewis Family. Irene Lavand and Family. Uncles Ernie Indian and Allan Lavand and family.

Steven was welcomed by those who left before him, his father Edmund, Uncles Brian Indian and Michael Lavand, his Aunty Linda Lavand, his Grandparents John & Bella Indian, Christine & Michael Lavand, and Carla Kelly (late partner). It can be comforting and heartwarming to accept that Steven will be reunited with his father, whom he missed so deeply, along with other loved ones who have gone before him into the spirit world.

As a young boy, much like his cousins Steven enjoyed spending his time at his grandparents John & Bella’s home in Onigaming. It was always filled with food, love and adventures with his cousins. His grandparents loved him dearly. He always had a kind and gentle spirit. He found comfort and peace in being in the outdoors. As a young man he learned to fish as his dad did and became a commercial fisherman for many years. He enjoyed cooking and taking long walks. On his walks he would find and collect eagle feathers and gift it to others. In later years he met many people who supported him in his pursuit for wellness and his desire for a better life.

The Family is grateful to the Services provided to Steven in Onigaming, Kenora and Fort Frances. These services provided safety and shelter in his time of need. We appreciate Clayton Kelly of Onigaming for his kindness who also took the time to check on his wellness. The family would like to thank the Fort Frances Hospital, Thunder Bay ICU staff, OPP Indigenous Liaison unit for the great care, dignity and understanding they gave to Steven. Steven will be greatly missed by his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steven’s memory be made to the Homeless Shelters in Kenora and Fort Frances in whatever way you would like to contribute.

Wake will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at the Mini Mall by the Hwy in Onigaming First Nation beginning at 3:00pm. Traditional service will be on Friday, August 28, 2026 at the Mini Mall Building beginning at 10:00am with Elder James Jazz Comegan officiating.

Pallbearers will be Dean Lavand, Jaysen Indian, Ray Indian, Roger Allan, Edmund Indian, and Shawn Indian.
