March 16, 1927 – February 11, 2018
Victoria (Vicki) Cederwall passed away at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents Matthew and Sidoria Mostow, stepfather Michael Szewchuk and husband of 60 years, Rudolph Cederwall.
She is survived by her son Matt (Stella), grandchildren Tyson and Kara and on Dale (Martha), grandchildren Janelle (Chris), Daniel, Lindsay (Pedro) and great granddaughter Anna.
She is also survived by her brothers Alexander ‘Strauss’ Mostow, Philip Mostow, and Peter Shewchuk (Betty-Anne) plus many nieces and nephews.
Vicki was born in Kenora and raised on Park Street. At the age of 5, her father passed away leaving a young family in the midst of the depression. Stories of being poor in the 1930’s are numerous and tell of hardships the family endured. She was proud of her Ukrainian family descent and upbringing.
She attended both Central and Lakewood schools before entering St. Boniface Nursing Hospital. Soon after, she met Rudolph Cederwall (Rudy) and they married in November 1950.
After her first year practicing nursing she contracted tuberculosis and spent the following year in Thunder Bay recovering in isolation.
After returning to Kenora built a home on Park Street, having children in 1953 and 1956. They built again on First Street South and she returned to her nursing career, later retiring in 1986. During her career Vicki held senior roles in many wards of nursing care.
They built their retirement home on Hilly Lake. She loved swimming, gardening and gathering blueberries and mushrooms. She also enjoyed the lake and beach, especially with her grandchildren. Vicki enjoyed many road trips with Rudy and their favorite was going to Calgary to visit family.
After moving to Valley Drive, Vicki became involved with the Pinecrest Auxiliary. Rudy’s passing left her with a void that was hard to fill. She always kept busy with her hobbies of attending concerts, musicals, sewing, knitting, stitching and quilting and cherishing her time with quilting groups.
She was a member of the New Horizon’s Senior Centre and a lifelong member the Lutheran Church where she met many special friends. She moved to Benidickson Court in 2015, renewing her friendship with many friends including a nursing friend Ms. Bert Morton. Thursdays were always the special day spent with her lifelong friend Grace Matthews.
A huge thank you to the doctors and nurses of Kenora District Hospital for the care and compassion during her stay. Thanks to family for being by her side, especially her niece Wendy Paddock and brother Strauss.
As per Vicki’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date, when lilacs bloom. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be suggested to Museum for News Arts Centre (300 Main Street South, Kenora, Ontario P9N 1T2) and/or Kenora Special Olympics (1326 Pine Portage Rd., Kenora, Ontario P9N 2J9)
She will be missed and loved by many especially her family.
