Born on August 14, 1939, in Kenora, Ontario, Bill was the eldest of six siblings. His early years, spent on his Baba and Dido's farm in Dencross, Manitoba, were marked by the rich tapestry of family and heritage. While his father served overseas during WWII and his mother pursued her teaching career, Bill learned the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and humility. It was there he also embraced his Ukrainian roots, learning to speak Ukrainian and later in his life crafting beloved dishes like cabbage rolls, perogies, and borscht.
An outdoorsman at heart, Bill revelled in hunting and fishing, guiding others with enthusiasm at his family’s Broken Arrow Camp. The stories of his childhood were woven at Hidden Valley, Kenora's first ski lodge, owned by his parents, Nick and Mary. It was here that laughter echoed and memories were made, where Bill first learned to ski—a skill he lovingly passed to his children. His high school days were filled with joy—whether on the football field or gracing the stage in musicals. Music was a lifelong companion, echoing through car rides, campfires, and choirs.
At just 17, Bill answered the call of duty, joining the military in 1956. He found himself in the Sinai Desert with the United Nations Emergency Force, later serving in Germany. After three transformative years, he returned to Canada, where his journey continued in the Armed Forces, the Kenora Police Service and beyond. Bill brought justice and compassion to communities of Terrace Bay and Red Rock. His dedication to service extended into the Army Reserves and as an instructor for the Army and Navy League and Sea Cadets. Later, he shared his knowledge and passion as a Law and Security teacher at Confederation College, inspiring future generations.
Bill is remembered for the way he shared his time and energy with everyone around him. Whether he was being a big brother to his siblings, a scout leader, or an active member of Kinsmen, he was always there to lend a hand. As a hockey coach, he inspired young players, and as an event organizer, he brought people together with ease. He loved cooking for family gatherings and serving at his church, always ready to pitch in wherever needed. Bill truly went the extra mile for his friends and family, making a difference in their lives with his warmth and kindness.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Gwendoline (Gwen), step-son David Edward (Mel), and children Deanna (Tony), David (Sheri), and Leslie (Paul) from his former marriage to Darlene. He cherished his nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves behind siblings Michael (Janis), Terry (Rudy), Valerie (Mike), and Stash (Debra). He was preceded in death by his father, Nick, mother, Mary, sister Pat (John) and son, Douglas.
A funeral service to honour Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 2:00 PM at St. Alban's Cathedral. All are welcome to celebrate a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
Bill will forever be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his dedication to his community, and his noble service to his country—a legacy that will continue to inspire.
