I taught with Willie for many years, and I always found him happy, humble, and definitely "cool". :-) He and I would bounce ideas off each other, sometimes we would get to play together, and I always loved the stories he would tell about his younger days. I hope that some of these stories will be shared here, so that all can hear them.

My condolences to the family. And to Willie, I bet you're already leading that heavenly band!

My sincere condolences to Mr Mathis’ family and friends. I knew him from school and then eventually as passing acquaintances. I always called him the “Music Man” I always got a big smile.
He was a great person with a good sense of humour.
Please take care during this difficult time.

Willie Mathis led our jazz and concert bands in the mid 90s. He taught me to inhabit and live music- it was more than playing the right note at the right time, by the book. I had the honour of playing The Last Post at our school, and several others in town. It was Willie who revealed to me the privilege this held, but also the requirement: it should be played at a human pace; not prescribed, not metronomic, and not with any pressure of the program of the event. I still remember how he demonstrated just one way that this could be done. I cannot know the struggles of his life, but I appreciate the joy that he felt in interpreting music, and hope that he fully enjoyed his retirement. Rest in peace, Willie!

I was fortunate to have Willie as a neighbor while living on River Drive. I'll always remember his laughter while we spent hours together, whether playing horseshoes or just gabbing. He was truly a unique character and the backyard barbeques he and Chris hosted were always an enjoyable event.
I'm not certain he could play a harp, but I'm sure he is tinkering with it now.
Enjoy your new choir Willie and God bless.

Sad news. Willie was always pleasant and fun to be around. Had some great nights at the curling club. Willie was also a big influence on my son Justin just as my music teacher George demeduk was for me. I recall George being a cheerleader for Willie being hired as his replacement. Willies mark on a lot of Kenora music students will be felt for many years.
Play on my Willie.
