Miles William “Bill” McCullough Jr., lovingly known as Bill, Papa Mac, and Cowboy, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. A man of deep kindness, integrity, and generosity, Bill left an enduring mark on all who knew him.
Bill was born on June 7, 1934, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Miles William McCullough and Genevieve Carroll McCullough. He attended Brady Elementary School and Brady High School, where he graduated as valedictorian. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and a lifelong passion for animals, particularly cattle and horses. Raised with a deep connection to the land, Bill worked with cattle from the time he was a young boy and carried that dedication throughout his life.
He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he met Shirley Drown, who became his wife in 1956. He later earned his Master’s degree from the University of Nebraska and his Doctorate from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was there that he and his family of seven settled and built a life that spanned most of his years.
Bill became a Doctor of Animal Nutrition and a respected beef cattle specialist. He was widely recognized in his field for his groundbreaking research on whole corn, earning a reputation as a leader and innovator within the industry. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill will be remembered most for how he treated people. He had a rare gift for making others feel valued, offering encouragement, guidance, and genuine care to every person he met.
He excelled in sports and always encouraged others to participate and enjoy the camaraderie and discipline that athletics provide. His energy and enthusiasm were contagious. Bill also had a special bond with animals—especially dogs, they love him as much as he loved them. Whether being with his Family, raising horses, working with cattle, or spending time with his beloved dogs, he found great joy and purpose.
A devoted family man, Bill was the most loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was always the first to help someone in need, giving freely of his time, wisdom, and compassion.
Bill is survived by his wife, Carol Story; his daughter, Dr. Miriam “Mimi” Shaw (Matt); his son, Matthew “Matt” McCullough (Adele); and his daughter, Mary McCullough. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Miles IV, Mark, and Matthew McCullough; Tessa Mackey (great-grandchild Lennon); Tyler Shaw; Zachary McCullough (Shandra) (great-grandchildren Kaison, Kyler, and Kolbie); Samantha Dinkle( Timmy) (great-grandchildren Rosalee and Carson); Brittany Contreras (Luke) (great-grandchild Jasper); John Saeman IV (Ashley) (great-grandchildren Rory and Mia); Jackson Saeman (Catherine, expecting a child); and Brooklyn Casner (Drew).
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Drown McCullough; his son, Miles III; and his daughter, Dr. Melani McCullough.
Bill’s legacy is one of love, generosity, and quiet strength. He uplifted those around him, led by example, and left the world better than he found it. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
