John was a longtime resident of Kimball, Nebraska, and lived a life filled with service, adventure, hard work, and devotion to his family. He proudly served in the United States Navy for four years before returning home to build a successful career and serve his community.
Throughout his life, John owned and operated several restaurants, including the beloved Hik’ry Inn, where he became known for his strong work ethic, hospitality, and friendship. His dedication to public service was equally remarkable. He served on the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, of which he was the Fire Chief for 16 years and was honored with the title of Honorary Admiral of the Nebraska Navy in recognition of his contributions to the state and community.
John had a passion for the outdoors and adventure. He loved boating, scuba diving, hunting, and fishing, and he treasured the many memories made with family and friends on the water and in the great outdoors.
He is survived by his daughters, Sherri Thacker Reed, Cindy Thacker Webb, and Toni Thacker; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Barbara Ann Thacker, and his son, William John Thacker Jr.
A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held on June 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Oliver Reservoir, west of Kimball, Nebraska.
John's legacy of service, dedication, and love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
