

Charles graduated from Traverse City High School in 1940 where he and his team mates won the Class B State Championship in basketball. Charlie enlisted in the US Coast Guard and served his country for three years during WWII.
Charlie retired from Michigan Bell after 40 years as a Line Foreman. He married June Rule in 1943 and then, later, Nancy Houghton in 1965.
Charlie was a member of the Elks and Eagles in Traverse City, the Fife Lake American Legion, and a life time member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed woodworking and made many beautiful and functional things; like bird houses and snowshoes. Every summer he could be found tending his beloved flower garden and enjoying living on the Boardman River. Charlie also loved sports especially football, basketball, and baseball and he raised sled dogs. He was very generous to local charities and once sponsored a Canadian youth, helping put him through school. Charlie had numerous friends that span the generations
Charlie is survived by his daughters: Sharon (Tom) Pierce and Jennifer (Tom) Coy both of Traverse City, 3 grandchildren: Amy (Tim) Thomas, Amber (Brian) Zoulek, and Alyssa (Paul) St. John; 2 great grandchildren: Landon and Haley and on great great granddaughter: Kassie; brother: Jack Frye, sisters: Sally Payton and Verda Christian.
Besides his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by wife Nancy, son Jim Frye, and brother Arthur Knapp.
A visitation will be held Sunday, December 21, 2014 from 3-6pm at the Covell Funeral Home in Kingsley. A funeral will be held Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11 am also at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Charlie’s name may be directed to the Mayfield Chapel.
