Lee Orlin Henry, 89, passed away on Dec. 22, 2018 in Traverse City. Lee was born in Muskegon Township to Fern and Odal Henry on June 22, 1929. He attended school in Muskegon and graduated in 1946. He played football for the Muskegon Reds. Lee worked for shipping across Lake Michigan on various vessels and also worked on the rail-roads throughout southern Michigan.
Lee entered the service in 1950 and was attached to the 67th Battalion of the Second Division (Hell on Wheels) patrolling the borders of Germany. He served as a Corporal and drove a half truck as an
operator, mechanic and communication specialist. He was discharged in 1952.
He studied to be an electrician and soon went to work at the State Hospital in 1953, studied and wrote license for a licensed practical nurse for four years and then returned to the maintenance department,
from which he retired in the 1980s.
In retirement Lee and his wife of 53 years, Eleanor, served the community by volunteering for the ambulance department. They also enjoyed camping for 25 years in Lakeland, Florida, watching the Detroit
Tigers spring training and reading. Spending time with their grandchildren was a favorite pastime. Lee
also enjoyed trips to the Village Eatery, where he enjoyed meals with family and friends. When not working he enjoyed tinkering in the barn and yard work.
Lee is survived by his wife, Eleanor; one sister; two brothers; three stepchildren; four grandsons; five nieces; five nephews; and five great-grandchildren.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and two brothers.
A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, Dec. 29, from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Memorial contributions in honor of Lee may be made to the Rock of Kingsley Youth Center.
