

Mrs. Greene was born September 8, 1911 in Russell county, Virginia, the daughter of the late William Earl and Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Harrison Bailey. She has been a resident of the Kingsport area since childhood when her family moved to the area to tenant farm what is now known as Exchange Place. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Grant Herbert Greene, who died in 2003, brothers William Axley (Bill), Perry, Floyd (Preacher), Taylor (Tate) and by sisters Cornelia Powers, Audrey Hale Berry and Mildred Freeman and a great-great-grandson, Louis Grant Eilers. Mrs. Greene was the last surviving member of her family. She and Grant were charter members of the Sunnyside Baptist Church. Mabel was a devout Christian lady, a kind, loving mother, and grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother. She was a wonderful homemaker, a gifted cook, enjoyed vegetable gardening and flowers, working with small children in the nursery at her church. Mabel was a generous neighbor and friend. She loved her church family as well as her Remington House Assisted Living family. She lived as she grew up, “A simple life.” Her faith taught her to “serve the Lord and do what’s right.”
Survivors include her daughters, Joan (Stan) Younce of Charleston, SC and Brenda (Carl) Eilers of Kingsport. One step-son; Paul Jackson (Joyce) Greene of Kingsport. Grandchildren; Lisa Haga (Dale) Elliot and Keith Younce both of Charleston, SC, Laura Eilers (David) Borel of Marietta, Ga., and Carl W. (Jennifer) Eilers, Jr. of Johnson City, TN. Step-grandchildren; Susan Greene (Mike) Roeske of Kingsport, Beth Greene (Vic) Lollar, Leslie Greene Crawford, Lyn Greene (Terry) Byrd all of Maryville, TN. Great-grandchildren; Audrey Elliott, Sam, Sarah, Lauren and Rebecca Borel, Erin and John Louis Eilers. Step-great-grandchildren; Dustin and Christopher Bruner, Billy and Ali Kilgore, Alex Crawford, Ryan and Natalie Byrd along with four step-great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Greene will be conducted on Tuesday May 28, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. from the Sunnyside Baptist Church with Dr. Roy Graves officiating. Burial will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park.The family will receive friends on Monday afternoon from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Greene will be carried to the church on Tuesday to lie-in-state from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral hour.
The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers and they include; Keith Younce, Carl W. Eilers, Jr. , Larry Overbay, Benny Greene, Dale Elliott and Terry Byrd. Honorary pallbearers will include; Mrs. Greene’s nephews, and members of the Laura Winsome Sunday School Class of Sunnyside Baptist Church. Both active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church on Tuesday morning at 10:15 a.m.
