Mary Sanderson

She was born on a farm between Kipling and Kennedy, Saskatchewan, to Jim and Klara Barta. From her early years on the farm, she developed a strong sense of independence and a love for bringing people together. She went on to open several restaurants, where her love of cooking and hospitality could truly shine. Sharing good food and welcoming people into her life were an important part of who she was.

She also opened a gift shop and proudly named it after her children, a lasting reminder of how much her family meant to her.

Her love of her community was evident in many ways. She served on numerous boards throughout her life. The last one being the President of the Kennedy Library Board. She was a strong advocate for reading and the importance of having books and libraries available to everyone. She believed in the value of learning and encouraged others to discover the joy of reading.

She will be remembered for her love of cooking, her independent spirit, her generosity and the special connections she made with those around her. Particularly in her later years, she was fortunate to have many wonderful people beside her: her close friend Halina and husband Gerry; her caring neighbors Bonnie and Jim and Clare and Lorna; Amanda and children Danika and Spencer were a tremendous source of friendship and support; her angel with scissors, Connie and her favorite librarian Caroline and husband John. She was grateful for the care and assistance of Jill, a local EMT. Also the wonderful home-care workers who helped her remain at home and the caring staff at Deerview Lodge.

She is survived by her children: Veronica, Galen and Constance; her four grandchildren, who brought her great joy; brother Jerry; sister-in-law Doris and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her soulmate Galen Wahlmeier; her parents James and Klara; brothers Richard and Jimmy and sister-in-law Betty. She was also preceded in death by Molly, her beloved cat, who was a cherished companion.

She leaves behind a legacy of family, friendship, community service and love. Her kitchen, her restaurants, her gift shop, her work with the library and most importantly, the people whose lives she touched will all carry a piece of her memory forward.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
