Carolyn Duggan McCarter, Knoxville TN, age 90, passed away at Elmcroft Senior Living facility on Friday, April 20, 2018. Born October 7, 1927 in Sugarlands area of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, she lived in Pigeon Forge, TN for 53 years before moving to Knoxville, TN. She attended Pi Beta Phi area school in Gatlinburg, TN where she worked for her tuition. Carolyn and her late husband, Roy C. McCarter, lived in Pigeon Forge for many years where both were active in the church and community life of the city. In the 1970’s, they opened and operated an antique business at the Five Oaks Farm home place in Sevierville, TN. She and Roy were delighted in selecting antiques for their business and Carolyn, in particular, conducted most of the research on their finds. An avid reader and lover of plants, Carolyn delighted in opening a new book to enjoy the simple pleasures that a book provided. Planting and small gardens were an expression of her enjoyment of nature as well as her childhood memories of the mountains of East Tennessee. Born in the Smoky Mountains, the family later moved to Walden’s Creek in the Townsend, TN area. Married at eighteen to her husband, Roy, they settled in Pigeon Forge. After Roy’s death in 1989, Carolyn lived by herself until 2002 when she moved to Knoxville. Her daughter, Linda and Son-in-law Bob, built a log house of their property designed just for her and her beloved antiques. Carolyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda McCarter Murawski and Robert J. Murawski, Jr.; granddaughter, Courtney L. Niemann and husband David B. Niemann; two great grandchildren, Justin R. Niemann and Tyler G. Niemann; her sister Blanch Crowson, Maryville, TN, and brother Dwain Duggan of Maryville; many nieces and nephews. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Roy McCarter and her son, Tony McCarter, her parents Oscar and Emma Duggan, sister Bernice Acuff and brother, Kenneth Duggan. The family is very grateful to the staff of Elmcroft Senior Living for the care and comfort they provided to Carolyn during her time at the facility.
