On the 18th of November, Cheryl Midyett of Knoxville passed on to the realm of peace and eternal love. On Easter Sunday of 1944, the daughter of Albert Gustave and Janice Sollberger was born and grew up in Houston, to a “Texas Three Hundred” family whose Hunter and Allen roots preceded the Republic of Texas’ secession from Mexico.
Cheryl attended Lamar High School in Houston and was a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. While at SMU, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, later becoming a national officer, as was her mother. Cheryl later “adopted” the Tri Delta Chapter at the University of Tennessee, where she remained active in its alumnae group and as an officer of its House Corporation.
After graduation from college, Cheryl lived in Paris and London, and taught mathematics for a year at the Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland.
She met her future husband, Tom Midyett, while both were students at SMU. They were married at Thanksgiving, 1967, and shortly moved to Knoxville where she taught mathematics, primarily at Bearden High School, while Tom finished his law degree at the University of Tennessee.
In 1970 they moved to the Nashville area and settled in Brentwood where they began their family. In 1971 son Mark was born followed by son Brent in 1973 and daughter Mollie in 1975. While in Nashville, Cheryl became an active volunteer in numerous organizations. She also supported Tom’s elections and service on the Brentwood City Commission.
In 1979, the family relocated to Knoxville when Tom was named General Counsel of the East Tennessee Natural Gas Company. Cheryl continued her volunteer activities in Knoxville with the Girl Scouts, CASA, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Knoxville Opera, her beloved First Church of Christ, Scientist, her Tri Delta Sorority, and as a University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Associate.
Never to forget Cheryl’s love and unselfish giving to others, are her husband Tom, sons Mark (Jenny), and Brent (Melissa) of Knoxville, and daughter Mollie Grant (Randy) of Charleston, South Carolina. And five grandchildren whom she adored.
A line from one of Cheryl’s favorite hymns “A grateful heart a garden is, where there is always room for every lovely, Godlike grace to come to perfect bloom” embodies how Cheryl lived a life filled with grace and gratitude. She will live forever in the hearts of her family and of all who knew her.
Her family will receive friends for a celebration of Cheryl’s eternal life at 2 PM, followed by a service at 3 PM, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville.
Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Cheryl’s name is invited to do so to Adventure Unlimited Camps, 5201 S. Quebec Street, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111-1802 or adventureunlimited.org.
