David Sheldon Smith

Smith, David S., passed away on December 23, 2014 after a short illness at Select Specialty Hospital, Knoxville, TN. He was 86 years old and born in Oneonta, New York on March 18, 1928 to parents Albert E. Smith and Marion S. Winans. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Mary Hayes of Rochester, New York, who was the highlight of his life. David is also survived by 3 sons, Bruce C. Smith, Towsend, Maryland; David W. Smith, Greensboro, North Carolina and Douglas B. Smith (Julie) of Tifton, Georgia, whom he considered his greatest assets; and 5 grandchildren, Justin, Amanda Branson, Jessica, Taylor and Hillary Smith; 2 step-grandsons Dustin and Darin Sanders and one great grandson Kane Branson. He is also survived by brother Robert (Jeanne) Baird of Orchard Park, New York, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Alan G. Baird, Jr., of Clarks Mills, New York. David graduated from Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, New Jersey in 1946, after which he enlisted in the Army and served in the Army of Occupation of Japan. Upon discharge he enrolled at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York and graduated in 1952. He spent 41 years with Alcoa including several assignments in Marketing and Sales. After his retirement from Alcoa, he and Mary, also an Alcoa retiree, enjoyed extensive travel, visiting family and the company of many great friends. He was a member and past President of Alcoa’s East Tennessee Retiree’s Association, past President of Highland Point Homeowner’s Association and Hart Cove Landing Homeowner’s Association. The family will receive friends on Saturday December 27th from 12:00-2:00pm with a Celebration of David’s Life to begin at 2:00pm at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home. The entombment will follow in Berry Highland Memorial Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, suggested remembrances are The Salvation Army, Mission of Hope or your charity of choice.
