Donald Lamar Scates

He retired as Captain from the Knoxville Fire Department with 32 years of service and a home builder. Don was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Scottish Rite Temple in Knoxville, a long time member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, Howard and Rosa Scates; brothers, Odes, Doug and Houston Scates; sisters, Grace Beal and Lillian Moore.

Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Atchley) Scates; daughters, Donna (Randy) McNeil, Kelly (Don) Scates and Gina (Jeff) Reynolds; 5 grandchildren, Chris (Gina) McNeil, Malea (Christian) Ford, Jordan (Bradley) Dowis, Dylan Reynolds and Payton Reynolds; 4 great-grandchildren, Bryce McNeil, Blake Woods, Sutton Ford and Kollins Ford; sister, Nellie Thomas; several nieces and nephews and numerous family and friends.

The family will receive friends Thursday July 7, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home 3704 Chapman Hwy. Family and friends will meet at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery Friday July 8, 2022 for a 8:30 a.m. Graveside service. Rev. Kirby Ownby officiating. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to Mt.
