Dorothy (Dot) Davis Cowan, born in 1926 in Knoxville, passed into the arms of her heavenly Father and Savior on December 24, 2020. “Miss Dot” was a beloved children’s Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and a dedicated choir member at South Knoxville Baptist Church. A countless number of children first learned of Christ through the teaching and nurture of Dot Cowan. She attended Wednesday evening prayer meetings and orchestrated church meals for many, many years. Dot’s love for the Lord and His people was demonstrated in all these activities. Dot fulfilled her mission on earth by expressing the Gospel of Christ to others. Dot loved the Lord, her family, and her friends fiercely. Dot devoted extraordinary care to her Mother, Emma Lee Davis, in her final years. Yet, Dot was a flirt and the life of any gathering she attended. Dot loved the Braves, a friendly game of gin rummy, shopping, and most of all BINGO!
Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Mel Cowan, her parents Emma Lee and Tom R. Davis, her sister Mary Lane Davis Watson, her brother, Tom R. Davis, Jr., and her treasured niece Mary Ann Bruss Fisher. Dot is survived by her family, Mary Jean and Greg Bruss, Kate and John Watson, Laura and John Paul Bruss and their children Ryan, Rachel, Madelyn, and Joshua Fisher.
Dot struggled with health issues these past few years, but remained stoic and buoyant nonetheless. The family is grateful to the many devoted caregivers at Shannondale Assisted Living and Healthcare and to her special caregiver and friend, Ms. Charlisse Garner.
Berry Funeral Home will be serving the family. Graveside service will be held, Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at 11:00 AM at Berry Lynnhurst Cemetery, 2300 Adair Dr. Knoxville, Tennessee. Dr. Glenn Sullivan to officiate.
Our family would be humbled if you would like to make a donation to your favorite children’s or hunger ministry in memory of Dot Cowan. To Him Be the Glory.
