On Thursday, June 27, 2019, Edward Joseph Novak Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, and “great papa”, peacefully passed away at the age of 94 in his home. He was born Feb. 19, 1925 in Hudson, PA to Julian & Josephine (Ciechowski) Novak, graduated from Plains High School in 1942, moved to Roselle, NJ, and served in the Army during WWII. On Jan 15, 1955, he married the love of his life, Helen Kawalec. Ed met Helen at her sister’s wedding where he was the best man and Helen the maid of honor. Helen & Ed were inseparable for almost 64 years of happy marriage, living in Colonia, NJ, Lakeland, FL, and Maryville, TN. Ed’s treasure was his wife and sons Edward Jr. and Thomas, and daughter Suzanne. He served as assistant scout master for Troop 45 in Colonia, NJ and enjoyed home maintenance, camping, chopping wood, vegetable gardening and hunting for wild mushrooms. We will miss your sweet smile and unwavering love for us.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Novak, his parents, Julian & Josephine Novak; and siblings, Virginia Zapotosky, Josephine Stec, Anne Kozlowski, Dorothy Ratzman, and Julian Novak. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Cindy Novak of Thornville OH, and Thomas and Kathy Novak of Chattanooga, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne “apple cheeks” and Jeffrey Morris of Maryville, TN; grandchildren, Pamela Huson, Kimberly LaMarca, Elizabeth Novak, Hannah, Jaime, Bailey & Gage Morris; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Huson II, and Valentina, Julianna, Aubriella, Alessandra and Eliana LaMarca; brothers and sister-in-laws, Frank and Lois Novak, and James, Irene, and Virginia Novak. Many, many thanks to all of daddy’s caregivers especially Teri Snelgrove and BMH Hospice. You are all very special people.
Visitation will be at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN on Thursday, July 18th from 5:00pm until 6:00pm, with a Celebration of Life service following at 6:00pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Doug Owens at Our Lady of Fatima, 858 Louisville Road, Alcoa, TN at 11:00am on Friday, July 19th, with interment of ashes to follow.
