George Edward Mellon, 97, of Knoxville, TN was called home to his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 2, 2026, passing peacefully at home in the tender embrace of his loving family. He was a man of deep and abiding faith; a devoted follower of Christ whose life was a quiet and steady testament to the grace he so firmly believed in.
George was a longtime, faithful member of Linden Baptist Church in Knoxville, where he served his church family with joy and dedication for many years, including as a beloved Sunday School teacher. His faith was not merely something he professed, it was something he lived every single day. Whether it was a neighbor in need, a friend going through a difficult season, or a stranger who simply needed a helping hand, George was always the first to show up, sleeves rolled up and heart wide open. He gave freely of his time, his energy, and love.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, George served his country with honor and distinction. He went on to build a distinguished career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from which he eventually retired. But of all his many accomplishments, none brought him greater pride or deeper joy than his family. He loved them immensely with the kind of steady, unwavering love that only grows stronger with the passing of years.
George was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Betty Mellon, and his beloved wife, Sharon Mellon. He was also reunited in glory with his mother, Bessie Mellon; son, Albert Mellon; sisters, Flora Orick and Virginia Hodge; his brothers, Raymond Mellon, Bud Mellon, and Elder Mellon.
Left to cherish his memory and carry forward the legacy of his love are his children, Mike (Tammy) Mellon, Randy (Donna) Mellon, and Anita (Ed) Driggers; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 precious great-great-grandchildren. He is also mourned by a wide circle of dear friends and neighbors whose lives were made richer simply by knowing him.
George was the kind of man this world is better for having had in it, and those who were blessed enough to call him friend, neighbor, or family will carry him in their hearts for the rest of their days.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life and legacy of George at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, with a visitation from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and a funeral service to follow. Family and friends will meet at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 East Governors John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920, on Thursday, May 14, 2026, for a committal service at 10:00am, Pastor Jerry Wright to officiate the services.
