Born December 31, 1934, in Knoxville, Tennessee, James spent his entire life in the area he loved. He worked faithfully for 49 years as a manager at Sherwin-Williams, where he was known for his strong work ethic and leadership…eventually meeting his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Hays, at their main office on Gay Street.
A loyal friend and neighbor, James was an avid fisherman and hunter. His outdoor adventures were legendary – Sam Venable featured his exploits in a Knoxville News Sentinel article that later appeared in Venable’s book, “A Handful of Thumbs and Two Left Feet.”
Above all, James cherished his time with his family and especially his grandchildren and created countless memories with them.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane Hays; his son, David John Hays (Alison); and his grandchildren (John David, Charlotte and Garrett).
A private family graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James’ memory to the Young-Williams Animal Shelter, in honor of his faithful companion and best dog, George Nelson.
James will be remembered for his steadfast character, his love of the outdoors, and the quiet joy he brought to all who knew him.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelations 21:4
